I joined Kedron Adult Starter’s Band in 1996, arriving with a brand-new flute purchased the previous day, and never having played an instrument before, nor read music. That first rehearsal taught me that a flute comes in three separate pieces and that one must blow over the mouthpiece, not into it. In early 1998 the Adult Starters group hinted that we were no longer “starters”, so I stood up at rehearsal one night and suggested to the players that there was a need to set up a small committee to enable some discussion, to determine what our future might be. I thereby became the first President. Soon after this, we were set adrift from Adult Starters and we were nameless for a while.
When a new conductor took over, she rightly suggested that we should have a name and asked for ideas; there was a long silence, and then I finally decided to suggest “Second Wind”. The conductor’s reply – a big emphatic NO!!! – her mindset was confined to the traditional predictable type names and she was not impressed with such a name.
So, we remained nameless until two new conductors took over the conducting role and the senior conductor also suggested that we should have a name. Similar to the last time, there was silence, so I looked around and said to Janet “I might put forward my idea again”. Well, our new conductor immediately smiled and enthusiastically agreed, and so we became Second Wind Community Band; the Inc. was added when the band was incorporated under the QLD Associations Incorporation Act on 13th August 1998.
